What To Do If You Have Been Raped Or Had An Attempted Rape PDF Print E-mail
  1. Get to a safe place
  2. If you are injured, call 911 for immediate help
  3. You may go to the hospital up to 7 days after the rape
  4. Go directly to University Medical Center (UMC) at 1800 West Charleston (Rancho and Charleston) Enter the Adult Emergency Room and advise the triage / intake personal that you have been sexually assaulted.  At this point, they will escort you to a private room.  You will be seen as a priority patient.  If you are unsure of where to go, please call The Rape Crisis Center's Hotline 702-366-1640 or toll free 888-366-1640 24 hours a day
  5. DO NOT shower or brush your teeth, if at all possible DO NOT use the Restroom, DO NOT drink or smoke
  6. DO NOT change your clothes, or underwear.  If you have removed this clothing, bring it with you to the hospital in a paper bag.  This is preserve any and all evidence.
  7. It is essential you seek medical attention within 7 days as there may be valuable evidence of the crime left on your body and clothing.  If you have showered, brushed your teeth etc, you may still get medical attention for injuries you may not be able to see.
  8. The hospital staff will alert the police of your arrival. It is up to you if you would like to file a police report or to a police officer. If you decide to make a police report, the sooner you report the crime the better.  If you do not file a police report, the exam may be your financial obligation.
  9. If you are concerned about Sexually Transmitted Disease, ask the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner about the antibiotics given at the time of the exam.
  10. If you are concerned about pregnancy ask the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner about emergency contraception that is available.  There are prescription methods available, but must be given within 7 days. The regimen involves taking two doses of pills administered 12 hours apart. It is up to the patient if they choose to take the medication or not.  The Rape Crisis Center does not advise either way.
  11. You may want to have a trusted friend or relative go with you to the hospital, if at all possible.
